From the Mining Industry...

In the 1970s, safety standards in Sweden’s mining industry were still severely underdeveloped. Gates at elevator shafts were often only secured with a basic latch. In the dark, compact environment underground, miners faced a serious risk of falling straight down the shaft.

Jan Stendal recognized the urgent need for reliable safety solutions in this tough environment. In 1975, he founded Stendals El AB and soon developed an electrically controlled lock that ensured the gate remained locked unless the elevator was properly docked at the shaft. This became the company’s first electric lock – STEP 1.

More lock models followed, and their solid construction quickly became popular. Mines throughout Sweden and internationally were automated with technology from Stendals El AB. This period also laid the foundation for the company’s core values – values that still guide us today: uncompromising functionality and quality.
