Jan Stendal founded Stendals El AB in 1974 after seeing a need to strengthen the safety of Sweden’s mining industry. The solution was an electrically controlled lock which made sure that the gate was automatically locked when the mine shaft’s elevator was not in the opening of the mine. It became the company’s first electric lock, STEP 1.
More locks were developed and the solid designs quickly became popular. Many mines in both Sweden and abroad were commissioned and automated with technology from Stendals El AB. At the same time, the foundation was laid for the values that characterize the company today: always the highest functionality and reliability.
Today, the focus has shifted from a narrow niche of locks for the mining industry, to being the market leader in Scandinavia in electric strikes with solutions for all types of door environments. The product range includes, in addition to electric strikes, solenoid handle locks, electric locks for industrial doors, automatic flushbolts and electric cabinet locks.
The head office and production plant are located under the same roof in Västerås, enabling quality assurance at all stages of product development. The swedish sales offices are placed in Västerås, Eskilstuna, Stockholm, and Helsingborg. In 2018, StepLock Norway AS was established in Drammen, Norway. Distribution of our products is primarily through competent retailers located throughout Scandinavia.
